El Paso lost one of its giants this weekend.

Joe Olvera, a pioneering Chicano journalist, writer and community activist, died at age 71 Friday in El Paso.

His daughter, Diana Olvera Garcia, wrote on her Facebook page that she lost her “hero” Friday when he passed away from a heart attack.

“I’m going to miss him so much. His jokes, his voice, his laugh, his wise words,” she wrote.

Olvera, an El Paso native, worked as a reporter for the El Paso Times, the El Paso Herald-Post and KDBC-TV. He also worked at USA Today as one of the editors on its Across the USA page. In recent years, he had been battling diabetes.

He also wrote several books, including “Voces de la Gente” and his latest “Chicano – Sin Fin! Memoirs of a Chicano Journalist.”
