5 More Stereotypes Of Latino Professionals
Man, I thought I had compiled an exhaustive list last week of the Top 5 Stereotypes of Latino Professionals: You’re always late; You laugh or talk too loudly; You have a short tempter; You’re spicy/overly sexual and You’re just biding your time to breed. But in response our News Taco readers told us we had missed many, so here are a few more stereotypes we neglected to survey last week:
- You don’t speak English. You know, because you have accents on your last name. Oh, you’re from the United States? Don’t you speak Spanish at home, all the time? What do you mean you went to school and graduated from college in English?
- All Latino employees stick together or are related. Have you seen Rosa, you know, the janitor? You don’t know her? I thought you guys all knew each other! Is Jesse from accounting your cousin, you’re both named “González?”
- You steal office supplies and lie on your travel and expense reports. C’mon, did you really need to eat lunch every day during that recent vacation? Did it really cost you $10 to eat at a sit down restaurant? Hey, weren’t there five bottles of white out, what happened to the other two?
- You only eat Latino foods. Hey, I was wondering if I could buy some tamales from your mom — what does the fact that it’s June have to do with anything? Oh, wow, you brought a sandwich for lunch today, special day, huh?
- When/if you speak Spanish, even for professional reasons, you are talking about them. We wrote a post about this recently, but the truth is, whether you’re speaking Spanish for work or just chatting with your co-workers, the probability is pretty slim you’re actually criticizing your co-workers.
