Texas GOP Redistricting Plan: Biased, Prejudiced, Bigoted

News Taco interviewed Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair and San Antonio-area Democratic Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, who spoke to us about the prejudicial undertones of the Texas Republicans’ redistricting plan in Texas. He previously spoke to us about the danger of immigration as a wedge issue.

Essentially Gonzalez said that the Republican plan for redistricting in Texas does not empower Latino voters, and there are undertones of racism in the ways in which Latinos — whose growth practically handed the state four new Congressional seats — are packed and diluted under the new plan.

Ultimately, and as we’ve reported before, the final maps will be drawn up by the courts, but unfortunately, Gonzalez thinks this may result in only slight alterations to the already biased plan. Our best hope, he told News Taco, is to hope fair judges will work hard to make this plan fair to an increasingly Latino state.
