VIDEO: Will A Latino, Castro Twin, Vie For Hutchison’s Senate Seat?
In case you haven’t heard, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison decided not to seek another term in the Senate. This is especially awesome because she didn’t vote for the DREAM Act and could have surely persuaded other people to do so if she had decided to vote “yes,” but partisan politics are so much more important than the right thing, ey?
Her leaving has sparked a lot of speculation in Texas as to who will be the next U.S. Senator and several among the chisme include Latinos. Texas is still considered a red state, but having lived here for several years, I can tell you it’s not that black and white. A few names being thrown around in contention for her seat include:
- David Dewhurst – R, the current lieutenant governor, he actually said he would consider running
- Roger Williams -R, a Fort Worth car dealer and former secretary of state
- Bill White – D, former Houston mayor who just lost to current Republican governor Rick Perry in November
- John Sharp – D, former state comptroller
- Chet Edwards – D, former U.S. Rep. of Waco who just lost in November
- Julián Castro – D, current mayor of San Antonio
- Adrian Garcia – D, current Harris County Sheriff
We interviewed Julián Castro’s twin brother State Rep. Joaquín last week and asked him what he had to say.
Just so you know, this is one of several videos we plan to run from that interview; notice that while he doesn’t say he’s thinking about running for Hutchison’s seat, he doesn’t deny it like Julián did. Keep in mind that these two men grew up on San Antonio’s westside (traditionally not the “best” side), attended Stanford University undegrad and then graduated from Harvard Law School. Credentials aside, I was flabbergasted by how smart Joaquín is! That’s probably one reason why I end up giggling like a schoolgirl in this video, check it out.
