Susana Martinez OK with no Latinos in Trump cabinet, says he picked “best and brightest”
By Victor Landa, NewsTaco (1 minute read)
Some people feel that a Latino in Trump’s cabinet might give the president-elect a clearer perspective on his approach to U.S Latinos, the U.S.-Mexico border and to Latin America in general.
But there isn’t one, and the only Latina Governor in the country seems to be OK with that.
The Associated Press says that New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez is steering clear of any confrontation with Trump on the no-Latinos-in-his-cabinet matter.
The Governor went as far as to say Tuesday that the president-elect has “the right to pick ‘the best and the brightest’ for his team — even if that means there won’t be a Latino in his cabinet.”
I’ll break this down into the three most obvious parts:
One, Trump doesn’t have the “right” to choose the best and the brightest, he has the obligation to do so. We expect nothing less.
Two, Martinez’s remarks imply that she believes there are no Latinos among the best and the brightest in the country.
And three, I wonder if she realizes that she dumped herself in the “not best nor brightest” pile.

It’s disconcerting to see how the work of changing the U.S. Latino narrative stretches as far as our national leadership. It’s telling when our own leaders underestimate our worth.
