Peter Navarro, a UC Irvine business professor who became one of Donald Trump’s most enthusiastic campaign supporters, will lead a newly created National Trade Council, the president-elect’s transition team announced Wednesday.

The White House body will advise the president on “innovative strategies in trade negotiations” as well as help assess U.S. manufacturing capabilities and the defense industrial base, it stated.

The council will also lead a “Buy America, Hire America” program “to ensure the President-elect’s promise is fulfilled in government procurement and projects ranging from infrastructure to national defense.”
