Clinton and Sanders campaigns squabble over Hispanic voters

*If you’re keeping score, this is how it stands: Hillary won Nevada, Bernie says that’s cool because he won the Nevada Latinos (exit polling says so), but Hillary’s pollsters say it’s a myth, that Bernie didn’t get the Latino vote because a neighborhood by neighborhood analysis reveals that Hillary got a majority of the delegates in Latino-heavy districts. The takeaway isn’t the squabble, it’s that they’re both claiming Latino votes as the big prize. VL

Hillary Clinton’s more than 5-point victory over Bernie Sanders in Nevada on Saturday isn’t in doubt — but the two Democratic presidential campaigns are still squabbling over whether Sanders beat Clinton among Hispanic voters, as indicated by the entrance poll conducted for the news media.

That entrance-poll crosstab — which gives Sanders an 8-point edge over Clinton among Hispanic voters, 53 percent to 45 percent — has already become a key talking point for the Vermont senator. “Sanders Wins Latino Vote” read the subject line of Sanders campaign press release blasted out to reporters late on Saturday.

“What we learned today is Hillary Clinton’s firewall with Latino voters is a myth,” said Sanders deputy political director Arturo Carmona.

But the Clinton campaign insists the only myth is that Sanders won Latinos. Clinton campaign officials pointed to the nearly two dozen majority-Hispanic precincts that had reported results as of 8 p.m. Pacific time — claiming Clinton won 60 percent of the delegates in those precincts as evidence the entrance poll is inaccurate. And Clinton, overall, has a roughly 10-point lead in populous Clark County, which includes Las Vegas and where more than 30 percent of residents (and likely a larger percentage of Democratic caucus-goers) are Latino.

Rick Rivera
Rick Rivera’s first novel charts the sometimes hilarious, sometimes bitter-sweet saga of growing up in two cultures with the American Dream as a guiding light. In a series of poignant vignettes, the reader follows Ricky Coronado’s search for identity—a search made more difficult by the specter of his father’s suicide and the pressures placed upon him by his strong-willed mother. The narrator is a quiet but mischievous boy who retells the antics of his close-knit and often eccentric family. The amusing adventures of the clan include his stepfather’s proposal to his mother, visits to the psychiatrist and the comic misconstruction of Catholic catechism by well-meaning nuns. In his journey of self-discovery that harkens to the pioneer work of Oscar Zeta Acosta’s Brown Buffalo adventures, Ricky comes to the same solution that generations of hyphenated Americans have reached: the painful but rewarding creation of a new self that combines elements of both ethnic realities.
