New Mexico Latino GOP official ousted over Trump piñata says party leader had backed him

*Yeah, because free speech and all. What do you think? The NM GOP has neutrality rules, was this out-of-bounds? VL

Ignacio Padilla, recently ousted as treasurer of the Santa Fe County Republican Party, said the party chairwoman had enthusiastically supported his criticisms of presidential candidate Donald Trump before reversing herself late last week.

As evidence, Padilla showed The New Mexican a text message that county Republican Chairwoman Jo Ann Eastham sent to his wife after the first story about Padilla’s anti-Trump crusade appeared July 9 in The New Mexican.

“Thumbs up on Ignacio’s article this morning in the Mew [sic] Mexican,” Eastham wrote.

Eastham did not respond to specific questions about that text message or whether she had once supported Padilla’s campaign against Trump.

Instead, Eastham redistributed a statement saying she had warned Padilla that parading around with a crude piñata modeled after Trump would land him in trouble for violating rules that party officers stay neutral in primary elections.
