Most students have a tough time with the PhD question, but also won’t name more than two Latino writers. And typically, the only Hispanic national figures students can name are in the entertainment industry.

It’s not that the number of Latino accomplishments are few. The problem is that too few know our success stories.

I give this quiz to students who have made it through the public education system and to my sophomore-level course at Lone Star College-North Harris. Many take the course because they want to know more about their history and culture. But nearly a quarter of students who take my class are not Mexican-American or Latino – they simply want to know the full history and culture of Texas I clearly see the powerful effect culturally relevant literature and courses has on students. Mexican-American studies will inspire others to see this, too.
