Losing licenses in New Mexico

New Mexico was one of the first states in the country to allow undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license. Now, Republican Governor Susana Martinez wants to repeal the law, as do about 70 percent of New Mexicans. Reporter Tom Trowbridge rode along with one woman who wants to keep hers.

Tom, a native of Brooklyn, New York, came to New Mexico in the early 1980s from Oregon, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon. Additionally, Tom obtained a master’s degree in public administration from UNM in 1996. His radio career has included stops in Oregon, Delaware and Texas before he returned to New Mexico in 1990. His public radio experience includes work as a reporter and Morning Edition host at KUNM, as well as his current post at KSFR, Santa Fe Public Radio.
