Laura Gomez: How to get more Latinas into tech

SAN FRANCISCO — Laura Gomez has a quarter-million Twitter followers and has worked for some of the most powerful companies in high tech.

She belongs to the 3% — the 3% of workers in the industry who are Hispanic.

The 35-year-old entrepreneur came to the USA at age 10 from Mexico and didn’t gain legal status until her college years. Encouraged by her teachers, she looked headed for a career in computer science. She took a detour into economics and sociology, with an emphasis on race.

This background has given her a singular voice on how to transform a Silicon Valley workforce that’s largely white, male and Asian.
