President Enrique Peña Nieto marked the 204th anniversary of Mexican independence by heading a military parade in which members of the new law enforcement corps he created took part for the first time.

Almost 22,000 members of the army, air force and navy were on hand for the event in Mexico City’s giant Zocalo square, accompanied by 157 military vehicles, 13 naval vessels, 44 airplanes and 24 helicopters.

As the event got underway, Peña Nieto raised the national flag, accompanied by Defense Secretary Salvador Cienfuegos, Navy Secretary Vidal Francisco Soberon and National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido.
