Megamarch of 2006 inspired a new generation of Latino leaders

It’s 2006, and 19-year-old Arlington native Jennifer Cortez is walking in the megamarch through downtown Dallas.

“I saw more clearly then the need for change, for immigration reform so that undocumented students could have an education, and the need for our community to vote,” she said, remembering the impact the event had on her life.

Nearly a half-million people marched in unity that day to show their support of immigration reform. Marches around the country, including Los Angeles, had even greater turnouts.

But the 2006 megamarches had a far greater impact than anyone could have imagined at the time.
