Obama’s humanities and arts medals: inspiring but also a bit vanilla

New Yorker Camilo Jose Vergara, a path-breaking writer-photographer-documentarian, is a singular figure. And that was very much the case Wednesday when President Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal.

He was the only Hispanic among 24 winners of the annual National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Festival.

The regular White House press corps wasn’t too interested in exiting spokesman Jay Carney’s daily briefing Wednesday to head to the East Room and a refreshing, even uplifting, yearly gathering:  awarding of the annual National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal.
