Latino voters not swayed by last name in Massachusetts election

SPRINGFIELD — In the predominantly Puerto Rican Brightwood neighborhood, voters trickled in Tuesday afternoon to cast a ballot in the special election for U.S. Senate.

In the race for the remainder of Secretary of State John Kerry’s term, Democratic U.S. Rep.Edward Markey is facing off against Republican newcomer Gabriel Gomez.

City Councilor Zaida Luna, who has been supportive of Markey’s candidacy and has acted as a surrogate for him in the Hispanic community, said having a Hispanic last name does not guarantee Gomez the Latino vote.
