Is There A Gene that Causes Breast Cancer in Latinas?

Angelina’s Jolie’s recent disclosure about having a double-mastectomy because she was in a high-risk group of women who might develop breast cancer, has raised additional questions about the deadly disease. One such question is if there is a specific breast cancer gene for Latinas.

Dr. Cancy Arentz, a doctor at the UMC Breast Cancer Center in Texas, is currently leading a research study to find out. Her study, which was announced earlier this year, and which is funded by the National Institutes of Health, relies on saliva samples from Hispanic women that are either currently diagnosed with breast cancer or who have previously been diagnosed. And she needs our help.

Her goal is to collect 2,000 saliva samples to analyze their DNA, but “so far we have 100 samples,” she explains.
