Jeb Bush’s Book “Immigration Wars”: No Path to Citizenship

Former Florida Republican Governor Jeb Bush spoke to NBC Latino’s Sandra Lilley about his new book, Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution.  Increasing the country’s immigrants and enacting bipartisan immigration reform is the best way to boost the economy and stay true to the country’s ideals, says Governor Bush and co-author Clint Bolick.

Their six-point proposal includes a call to legalize the nation’s undocumented immigrants – but without a path to citizenship – stressing the need to maintain the rule of law as well as appeal to conservatives. The authors also say family reunification should be limited to spouses and minor children, arguing that the country needs to focus on bringing in more workers to replenish a diminishing labor force.

The book called Republican self-deportation rhetoric as “toxic” and criticized rhetoric that can “overtly or implicitly associate Mexican immigrants with crime and welfare.” Governor Bush, whose wife is Mexican and granddaughter is Iraqi-Mexican-American, says that for him, supporting immigration is “personal.”
