Survey: Latinos On Food, Sex and Money (NBC Latino): Three words that’ll get me to read a poll any day. Would you rather be rich or thin? Smart or good looking? Would you rather have sex or your favorite meal? It’s your brain’s guilty pleasure . You know you want to read it.

Health Varies Among Latino Subgroups, Study Says (Hispanic Post): Interesting, but more than that it’s good fodder the Latinos-are-not-a-monolithic-group argument. The study break Latinos down into three sub-groups: Mexicans, Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Then it goes into physical and behavioral health differences. Some interesting results: Mexican women have higher rates of diabetes; Puerto Rican women have higher rates of asthma; Cuban women report higher rates of hypertension and heart disease.

Voter Registration Investigations Target Latino Civil Rights Group (Huffington Post): My take? I think the only reason it hadn’t happened before this election season is that the folks who would have otherwise started the investigation have been too busy defending their Voter ID and voter suppression laws across the country. Now that the voter registration deadline is here and gone and the legal fights have dwindled, the pressure turns to the voter registration non-profits. Predictable. The NCLR is one of the organizations in the cross hairs.

Our View: UI would benefit from a program in Latino Studies (Press-Citizen): It’s notable that an Iowa newspaper editorial would call for a Latino Studies program at the University of Iowa while in Arizona Latinos have been waging an epic battle to save Latino studies in their state. To make their case the UI folks have put together a symposium where Junot Diaz will speak and Lila Downs will sing.

Shooting to Kill Immigrants on the Mexican Border (Counter Punch): This piece asks the question no one has yet asked in relation to the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent  in Arizona. The slain agent was with a group responding to a motion sensor. Another group was responding to the same sensor. An agent from the second group shot at the first group thinking they were immigrants, starting a shootout. The question: Why would a border agent investigating possible illegal border crossing take the first shot at someone he suspected of trying to sneak into the country? Good article.

Would Obama or Romney handle immigration best? Former Mexican President Vicente Fox demurs (Mlive): The very idea of Vicente Fox being demur hooked me. Turns out he didn’t so much demur as he tap-danced, but  spared us the show and went straight to the finale. who’s better on immigration, Obama or Romney? “I don’t know.” Better stuff are his remarks on the drug war, and the DREAM Act.

More immigrants seek citizenship in wake of Georgia law (Atlanta Journal Constitution): I’m not sure this is what the folks who thought up the anti-immigrant law had in mind…talk about unintended consequences: a 13% surge in naturalized citizens.
