Latinos The Victors At Both Conventions

By: Victor Escalante, Newstaco

The winners and losers of the DNC and RNC have been declared by the political pundits and media. Next on the horizon are the debates and all the barrage of negative ads to describe each other as the less popular party to the undecided and independent voters.

With the margin being so close, this is the perfect storm for marketers, media, bloggers, political surrogates and operatives. As of this writing all the tea leaves indicate President Obama will receive four more years to finish his job. Only time will determine what the final outcome will be.

Both parties provided high profile Latinos on stage to show the inclusiveness of Latinos to their party. This is good for all Latinos to recast the stereotypes that has been imposed upon us. The new generation of political Latinos is better educated and more main stream than their predecessors. They have arrived at their elected positions due to the doors that have been opened for them by the likes of Henry B. Gonzales and his generation.

One thing is certain; Latinos as a whole are clear winners to be on the national stage. This will no doubt encourage more Gen X’ers and Millennials to run for office. Which brings me back to Mayor Julian Castro and his performance. He made us proud! Many are already speculating what’s next for him. If he knows, he’s not saying what that is, publicly. San Antonio is the perfect city with its Latino cultural mix, for him to hone his political gravitas. To all Latinos seeking public service, “Vayan Con Dios!”
