Young Latina Will Have The Spotlight At The DNC

Victor Landa, NewsTaco

Alejandra Salinas is playing with the big boys this week. She’s a well spoken Latina from Laredo, Texas, the first Latina elected national president of the College Democrats of America, and in political circles this election season that’s a valuable combination. Recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, she now studies law at Boston College – except for this week, because this Thursday she’ll be delivering a speech in front of the biggest crowd she’s faced in her life.

It’s along way from Laredo, I should know, it’s my hometown. But she sounded calm and up to the task. Her job is to represent – young, Latina, politically engaged…it’s also to speak for a slice of the electorate that many people fear will stay home this election. Part of her job may be to assuage those fears.

So how do you get young Latinos to the polls on election day?

Alejandra’s speech at the convention is scheduled for Thursday. We’ll keep you posted as to the time.
