Hispanics set school, college enrollment records (Associated Press): Hispanic population growth and improved high school completion rates helped Latino young people become the largest minority group on college campuses and a fourth of the public school population last year, according to a Pew Hispanic report released Monday.

Calls made for more Hispanic spend in campaigns (RBR): As Randy Falco, Univision CEO recently sent a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates to complain about the lack of a debate tailored for Latino audiences, Javier Palomarez, CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, announced this week that his group would track spend by candidates and organizations on Spanish-language television, radio, and in print and online in 10 states through the November elections. Their found that in 2010, spending on Spanish-language TV averaged about 3.9%, down slightly from just over 4% in 2008, reported NBC Latino/AP.
‘Dreamers’ cautious about deferral plan (USA Today): Undocumented immigrants are taking their time filling out the paperwork for President Barack Obama’s deferred-action program that allows them to legally stay in the country because they have only one chance to get the application right.
Perry: State law unaffected by Obama policy on immigration (Houston Chronicle): Gov. Rick Perry says the Obama administration’s policy to defer deportation of many young immigrants who are here illegally doesn’t change any laws denying benefits to them. Perry, in a letter to state Attorney General Greg Abbott dated Aug. 16, called the policy “a slap in the face to the rule of law and our Constitutional framework of separated powers.”

Undocumented immigrants confront author of strict immigration laws (U.S. News & World Report): Protesters opposed to strict state-level immigration laws confronted one of the key writers of such legislation as he testified at a U.S. Department of Justice civil rights hearing here on Friday. Holding up small banners with the words “undocumented” on them, four self-proclaimed undocumented immigrants stood up one at a time to denounce the laws, interrupting the testimony being given by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who helped author the measures in Alabama and Arizona.
