Hispanic Ph.D.S Jump As Fastest-Growing Minority Gains (Bloomberg): The number of Hispanics with doctorates jumped 161 percent from 1990 to 2010, almost double the non-Hispanic rate of 90 percent, according to U.S. Census data. People of Latin American or Spanish ancestry have emerged as a powerful voting bloc, courted by President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney on job-creation and economic issues.
Hispanics, blacks want stricter gun laws, polls say (Voxxi): A Pew Research Center study released in April shows that, unlike the general American opinion, a majority of Latinos and blacks – the people most impacted by gun violence – support stricter gun laws.
More than 1 million young illegal immigrants expected to seek waivers (Associated Press/Atlanta Journal Constitution): The Obama administration’s new plan to grant temporary work permits to many young, illegal immigrants who otherwise could be deported may cost more than $585 million and require hiring hundreds of new federal employees to process more than 1 million anticipated requests, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press.
More Latinos among 6 million now not covered by changes to Affordable Care Act (Latina Lista): The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has reworked the numbers of how much the Affordable Care Act (referred insultingly among critics as Obamacare) is going to cost U.S. taxpayers. The good news: it will cost $84 billion less than previously expected, because of the recent Supreme Court decision that said states don’t have to expand Medicaid.
Latino vote leans to Obama despite dim immigration record (Voxxi): Surveys show that overall the country is evenly divided, with about 48 percent of voters for Obama and 48 percent for presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney. But, in the Latino community, it’s a different story. A recent survey by Latino Decisions found that the Obama is winning 70 percent of the Latino vote, compared to just 22 percent for Romney.
What happens if GOP’s voter suppression works? Pennsylvania Voter ID Law Goes to Court (The Nation): The Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania will hear a challenge to the state’s new voter ID lawfrom the ACLU and other voting rights groups. The lead plaintiff is Viviette Applewhite, a 93-year-old great-great grandmother who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. Applewhite worked as a hotel housekeeper and never had a driver’s license. Four years ago, her purse was stolen and she lost her Social Security card. Because she was adopted and married twice, she cannot obtain the documents needed to comply with the state’s voter ID law. After voting in every election for the past fifty years, she will lose the right to vote this November.
Arizona sheriff denies targeting illegal immigrants by skin color (Chicago Tribune): Veteran Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio, self-described as “America’s toughest sheriff,” denied on Tuesday that his deputies targeted people because of the color of their skin in a controversial crackdown on illegal immigration.
14 Illegal Immigrants Are Killed When Pickup Truck Crashes in Texas (The New York Times): Fourteen illegal immigrants were killed Sunday outside this rural South Texas town after the pickup truck they were riding in veered off a highway and struck two trees, the authorities said.
