Feliz Viernes – Barbacoa Blues!

I was inspired yesterday, by a conversation on the NewsTaco Facebook page. It had to do with what was and was not authentically Mexican or from Mexico. Someone brought up Barbacoa and Big Red. If you’re not from South Texas, specifically San Antonio, that reference may mean little to you. Suffice it to say that Barbacoa and Big Red is a very San Antonio thing,  a traditional Sunday morning “delicacy.”

The reference took my mind to Randy Garibay and his signature recording – Barbacoa Blues. A thing about Randy: he was criticized somewhat in the regional Tejano and Conjunto circles for not playing the more traditional Tex-Mex sounds, but Randy was a blues man, through and through. And he was true to what he felt.
