This Month In Film: July’s New Releases

When I think of July, I honestly only think of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, a movie I’ve waited years to see. I’m sure that’s the case for many others. While the new and final Batman movie (of Christopher Nolan’s that is) is exciting, there are quite a few other notable releases coming out in July too.
Tuesday, July 3rd
- The Amazing Spider-Man – Read our review + Watch the trailer – People were surprised that Hollywood was rebooting the Spider-Man franchise so soon. But when I heard that Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) will be directing the new Spider-Man, I was very interested. I became more interested when the casting news came out. Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) and Emma Stone (The Help) are two of the most talented new actors in Hollywood. Finally, the trailer makes it look like a ton of fun. It seems to have the right blend of action and romance, to make all types of audiences happy. (Wide; also in IMAX, 3D)
Thursday, July 5th
- Katy Perry: Part of Me – Watch the trailer – I’m not a fan of concert movies/documentaries, but for some reason, I want to see this one. Possibly because I am a fan of Katy Perry. After seeing her live in concert a few years ago, I learned that Katy Perry has a very infectious and charming personality and energy when she’s on stage. The trailer definitely shows that off, and I think it will pull her fans and audiences in, making this documentary a musically entertaining experience. (Wide; also in 3D)
Friday, July 6th
- Savages – Watch the trailer – Savages looks very Natural-Born-Killers-esque. It’s a very bold move for Oliver Stone, whose last films were the Wall Street sequel and W. Savages looks insane, a bit over-the-top and just like a hell of time at the theater. Plus, look at that cast! Based on Don Winslow’s novel about drug cartels, the film stars Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Benicio Del Toro, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Demian Bichir, Salma Hayek, Joel David Moore and Emile Hirsch. I’m sucker for good casts, so I’m sold. (Wide)
Friday, July 13th
- Ice Age: Continental Drift – Watch the trailer – Okay. I have to admit that I haven’t ever watched any of the Ice Age movies. However, when I saw the trailer for Continental Drift at the theater a few weeks ago, it had me laughing. It’s the only kids’ movie new this month, and it looks like a good one to check out. (Wide; also in 3D)
- Red Lights – Watch the trailer – Usually a movie like Red Lights would skip my radar. But luckily I caught a screening of it a few weeks ago, and it was very good. It stars Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murray as two scientists who study and bust so-called psychics. The movie was written and directed by Rodrigo Cortes, who also directed Buried (which I really liked as well). (Limited)
Friday, July 20th
- The Dark Knight Rises – Watch the trailer – Do I really need to explain why you should see the epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s fantastic Batman trilogy? Do I really need to convince you to see the most highly anticipated movie of the year? Do I really need to tell you about the movie that will make you go “Aveng-what?” (Wide; also in IMAX)
Wednesday, July 25th
- Ruby Sparks – Read our review – I love Paul Dano, and if you’ve seen any of his work (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood), you probably like the dude too. Ruby Sparks is definitely a sweet little indie that you should check out between your 11th and 12th viewings of The Dark Knight Rises. (Limited)
Friday, July 27th
- Step Up Revolution – Watch the trailer – Another one? Yes. Believe it or not, the Step Up movies are popular. And I must admit that I get it. Watching these movies gives audiences an infectious feel to jump out of their seats and start busting some moves. (Wide; also in 3D)
- The Watch – Watch the trailer – The Watch has a decent cast, with actors that have proven to be funny. Plus, the sci-fi twist doesn’t hurt. I’m not so sure how many laughs it will deliver. I suppose time will tell. (Wide)
- Searching for Sugar Man – Watch the trailer – This movie earned some great buzz at Sundance earlier this year. It’s a documentary about two South Africans who set out to discover what happened to their musical idol, a mysterious 70s rock ‘n’ roller called Rodriguez. (Limited)
