Julián Castro Sitting With First Lady At State Of The Union Address

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will be sitting next to First Lady Michelle Obama tonight in Washington when the President delivers his State of the Union speech. Castro flew to Washington this morning to be present in the coveted and very visible seat close to the First Lady. These are usually places reserved for first-person examples that have become a staple of State of the Union speeches.

The Mayor is one of, if not the most, visible Latino politician on the national scene and he’s been outspoken against Texas Governor Rick Perry’s stance on immigration. This, coupled with the interest that all national politicos have in the Latino vote and what it represents for their chances for winning elections, may be the motivation for the invite; whatever the case, this will be a young and prominent Latino’s chance to share a well-deserved limelight.
