Supreme Court Throws Out Texas Interim Maps

The U.S. Supreme Court today blocked the use of the interim congressional district maps drawn by Federal Judges in Texas. In its opinion, the court ruled:

“Because it is unclear whether the District Court for the Western District of Texas followed the appropriate standards in drawing interim maps for the 2012 Texas elections, the orders implementing those maps are vacated, and the cases are remanded for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”

The case was brought to the Supreme Court after a federal panel in San Antonio drew interim maps as a response to objections that the maps drawn by the Texas legislature discriminated against Latino voters.
