Report Shows Latinos In Colorado Lag Behind Others
A recent report from the Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy & Research Organization (CLARO) entitled “Snapshot of Colorado Latinos,” shows that in several realms Latinos in that state lagged behind others. Specifically, the report found:
- Latinos account for 20.7% of the population, but 32.9% of the prison population.
- The state’s graduation rate is 72.4% while Latinos graduate at rate of 55.8%.
- Twice as many Latinos are living below the poverty level.
- Children in immigrant households were twice as likely to live in poverty, 67% of immigrant families in the state are Latino.
- 87% of children in immigrant families are born in the United States
- 21% of the states children live in immigrant families
There are more interesting findings in the report, which you can read here.
A few interesting notes from the report included the fact that 65% of Latino Coloradans see the Colorado River as an “important and essential” part of their lives. In that sense, one could infer that Colorado has a larger community of Latino environmentalists. Another interesting part of the report noted that CLARO needs to address gathering data for the state’s LGBT Latino community.
The report concludes that there is a “need to bring Hispanic/Latino Coloradans to the same standard of living an opportunity as other Coloradans in education, economic development, housing, criminal justice, immigration status, energy and the environment, LGBTQ equality.”
