Today Is The First National Day Of Spanish
Buenos días, bienvenidos al primer Día de Español.
If you recall Jean Rockford Aguilar-Valdez had the idea for the day as part of a movement to stand in “support and solidarity with all those who have been marginalized, oppressed, and faced symbolic or actual violence as a Latino in the U.S.”
The event is promoted on Facebook with the general idea of speaking Spanish (as little or as much as you can, even if it’s just one word here or there) to show our solidarity with Latin@s who have been oppressed through their language diversity, legal or immigration issues, or in any other way.
I like the idea of this day, because, while being able to speak Spanish doesn’t “make” you more or less Latino, it’s definitely a big part of the culture. Here are a few posts we’ve written on the topic for your perusal, what are your thoughts on the National Day of Spanish?
