NewsTaco Weekly Roundup, September 18-24, 2011
Redistricting was a big part of our coverage early this week, we had a story about how a Latino Republican seems to have lied about his role in the redistricting process in Texas, which may have resulted in the disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of Latino voters. Then, the Texas Democratic Party deputy executive director wrote a guest column on the same issue, finally, NewsTaco’s very own Dr. Henry Flores chimed in about his experiences of the redistricting issue as a witness in the recent lawsuit in that state.
Then we had an inspirational story about a wheelchair-bound Zumba instructor, props necessary for any stereotypical Latino, how Latino is becoming mainstream in marketing, New Mexico’s model for Latino leadership, domestic partner health benefits approved for San Antonio city employees, a Latina Tea Party-backed candidate who’s a fake and a Chilean Independence celebration in Southern California.
My top pick of the week was a story that looked at how minorities receive less financial aid than white students in college. Finally, check out our Texas Tribune Festival coverage!
