Bien Hecho: 3 Latinas Lead UTSA’S First Marching Band
Three Latinas will head the 200-plus member University of Texas at San Antonio marching band as drum majors. The three were voted in by their peers and head the first ever marching band of UTSA. We’re highlighting them this week in our weekly segment, “Bien Hecho,” noting the good deeds and achievements of Latinos across the U.S. and Latin America. If you feel that someone you know is deserving of recognition, let us know at tips@newstaco.com.
Here’s an excerpt from a story from San Antonio about the three young women, Annie Moras, Alana Urbano, and Sydney Corbin:
The three Latinas said the pride surrounding the start of UTSA football has spurred their own excitement.
“Not only are we starting the program, but not a lot of (marching bands) have three drum majors and let alone female drum majors,” Urbano said.
Having three female drum majors is unique, they said. They were voted in by their peers after going through an interview process last spring.
“It’s really neat that we’re here to start it. It’s fantastic that it’s us three,” Moras added.
We’ve previously written about another Latina drum major — Linda Batista who was the first woman drum major at Notre Dame in 1972.
