Happy Friday From Lydia Mendoza!

I love Lydia Mendoza because, even in the 1930s recordings I first heard of her music, she’s got sass. She ain’t takin’ nothin’ from nobody and she’s going to let you have it the way she sees it. You can see it in the old photos of her, and then in the way she strums her guitar, the feisty delivery of her lyrics.

She was known as the first Tejano singer, known as La Alondra de la Frontera, or The Lark of the Border. Her folks fled the Mexican Revolution and she found herself in Houston, then singing her way to fame in San Antonio. Mendoza’s songs are like the original feminist quasi-Beyoncé “forget you fool I’m happy without you” music as far as I’m concerned.

Check her out and let us know what you think.
