Taco Vs. Burrito

You know what freaked me out when I moved from LA to San Antonio so many years ago? That burritos practically disappeared — as though they’d never existed at all! And, in their place, suddenly were these things called “breakfast tacos,” but instead of corn tortillas (which I had identified as “tacos” in LA), these were made with flour (my LA vernacular had me identifying flour tortillas as “burritos”).

Confusing, huh?

I’ve written before about the differences I’ve noticed between California and Texas Latinos, and this is no different when it comes to food. The two states are worlds apart when it comes to food, and this I found to be especially true in when it came to corn versus flour tortillas. Although I was raised in California in a world where corn tortillas were tacos and flour were for burritos, in Texas it didn’t seem to matter what kind of a tortillas it was, everything was a taco. Burritos were, well, not around.

Since, I’ve seen burritos increasingly pop up on the menus of Mexican food restaurants across the state, the product no doubt of Taco Bell influence, the Internet and the fact that everyone loves food. I guess when it’s all said and done, it doesn’t really matter whether you call it a taco or a burrito, but rather, whether the darn thing tastes good, right?
