Honestly, I feel kind of silly trying to summarize Selena’s music and career because, well, growing up in South Texas it wasn’t really an option to not know Selena.
Releasing her first album at 14, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez launched a career that would only span a decade before her untimely death, but would make light years of progress in getting mainstream recognition for Tejano music and Latino artists. With seven no. 1 singles on the Latin charts and becoming the first Hispanic artist to have an album debut at no. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, Selena touched her legions of fans and inspired countless future artists.
