Guapura 101: Natural Summer Highlights With Lemons
I remember when I was a kid someone complimented me on having light brown streaks in my brown hair. At the time, the most likely culprit was the endless hours I spent in chlorinated pools and in the sun. Nowadays, if I wanted to lighten my hair, I would take the advice I got either out of a beauty mag when I was in high school or from one of my tías: use lemon juice.
So I looked it up and, apparently, there is more than one way to do it, but the general way is this:
- Get some lemon juice.
- Either mix it with water and spray it on your hair or apply it to the areas you want to lighten (using a comb, perhaps to create natural-looking highlights). Be careful not to get this on your scalp, I imagine it could burn.
- Go into the sun with the lemon juice from 20 to 30 minutes, then go back inside.
- I would, at this point, wash my hair.
And its not that you want blonde hair — at least I don’t — but I must say it does look pretty when you have different shades of your natural color sometimes. I think I may try it this summer!
