Is the 2010 Census Driving the GOP Mad?
I’ve been out of the country for a couple of weeks and have had a chance to view United States politics through the eyes of non-Americans. It is really interesting to see yourself the way others see you. I was in Argentina on business but got a chance to talk to several very well educated and sophisticated groups about the effects Latinos will have on the next and future presidential elections.
I presented power point slides on the growth of Latinos throughout the United States and how this could affect the 2012 elections. And, then I said that Republicans are really on the verge of creating themselves into a permanent numerical minority and may never be able to win the presidency again for two reasons. The first reason was demographics; the second was the way the immigration debate is playing itself out.
On the demographic front Latinos are proliferating (that’s a nice way to put it no) throughout the United States but have accounted for 48% of the total growth in this country over the last ten years. We are becoming important voting populations in states such as North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Washington, Oregon. In short, we now populate more states than ever before and we have the potential to swing the Electoral College vote from one political party to another. Since, historically we vote Democratic at a 65% rate this means that the Dems have the advantage here.
Simplemente queremos immigration reform but all the Republicans want to do is build higher and more hi-tech walls along the nuestra frontera and now they want to fund Homeland Security for a program to round up all, si verdad, todos all eleven million undocumented persons and deport them. Now just think about what a program like this would mean. Here is a party that prides itself on its support of individual liberties, privacy rights, and freedom supporting the construction of a police state! ¡Que locura! I mean por favor!
Argentines, after hearing this presentation, just looked at me and said that it didn’t make sense. On the surface it looks like Republicans are pushing for laws that go against everything they believe in. If this is the case then Republicans are redefining their party into something that will not be acceptable to the majority of Americans. They are stabbing themselves in the heart, digging their own graves and will bury themselves all because this country has too many Latinos.
See, I really do think that the 2010 Census is driving the GOP insane. Next week I want to tell you about a Republican poll that supports the ascertains I made here today.
