VIDEO: José Ángel Gutiérrez On Texas Redistricting
Activist and attorney José Ángel Gutiérrez gave News Taco an interview about what’s at stake in Texas’ redistricting fight — which revolves around the huge growth of Latinos in that state. He gave a brief overview of several issues at stake:
- Latinos are not players in the redistricting fight.
- Latinos need to be 63% of a district in order to win an election because they’re only. 23% of the actual vote.
- In a case in Sherman, TX a case, Teuber vs. Texas, some authorities are trying to eliminate counting anyone but citizens for redistricting purposes.
- Latinos are the “new blacks, new slaves,” in the sense of the 3/5 Compromise, in which Latinos are counted for representation and taxation purposes, but have no political power.
