Latino Diaspora Merits Reporting

I’m not sure if anybody out in the Inter-webs is reporting on the US Latino diaspora as such – a diaspora. I find it fascinating.

For reasons having to do as much with the economy as with stricter border enforcement, the migration of Latinos has become more of a churn across the US than a path south and back. So we’ve been seeing the effects of a growing Latino community in places where there had never been Latinos before. The stories about the effects of Latino families to the economy, politics and culture of cities and towns, across the Southeast especially, are important and we feel they need to be told.

For instance, issues that were confronted generations ago in Texas and California are just now being seen in Tennessee and Alabama. Here’s a TV report about English language learners in Montgomery, Alabama, with all the issues and undertones that are well known across the Southwest. These issues will only intensify in the coming months and years as the full effect of the Census begin to be seen. The report is from WSFA-TV.
