Cases of Strokes Expected to Increase Among Mexican Americans

That’s the trouble with increasing populations, you can’t pick and choose the traits you want to bring along.
The American Stroke Association held their International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles this week, where the dire projection for Mexican American’s was unveiled.
Before you go off calling them buzz killers, check this out as it was reported in the Los Angeles Times:

By 2050, strokes (from bleeding and blood cots) among Mexican Americans could increase by 350%, from 26,000 cases in 2010 to more than 120,000 in 2050. Researchers used data from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi Project from 2010 to 2008 and information from the U.S. census to predict figures for future years.

The announcement of the statistical projection was accompanied in the LAT piece by a statement about how efforts to prevent strokes are critical. Buzz kill followed by buzz kill.

OK, so if you want to avoid being a stroke statistic projection, do stuff to prevent having a stroke.

Then there’s this gem:

Our group is currently targeting stroke prevention through Catholic churches, which might be a novel setting for successful intervention in Mexican-Americans.

This is good news, given the recent Catholic Church’s approval of a confession app. Only that’ll trade your risk of stroke for a case of text-thumb carpal tunnel. So it’s a wash.

En serio, though, I’m glad the American Stroke Association is looking into this. They say more research is needed to define specific intervention programs for Mexican Americans.

¡Pues órale! I’ll get out of their way and stop poking fun – this is important!
