Is Mexican President Calderon An Alcoholic?

The Mexican Congress is in a tizzy over allegations that Mexican President Felipe Calderon has a drinking problem, and by that I don’t mean he dribbles on his tie, at least not accidentally. In very plain English, some members of his opposition say he’s a drunk.

The allegations came to a head when opposing party members took the floor of the legislature and unfurled a banner that read “Would you allow a drunk man to drive your car? No, right? Then why do you allow him to drive a country?”

Recently a Mexican journalist named Carmen Arestegui, of the MVS Network, was fired after posing the question live on the air. Arestegui didn’t accuse President Calderon of being an alcoholic, she merely stated the question. A week later Mexican Labor Party congressman Gerardo Fernandez Noroña called, from the floor of the Mexican legislature, for MVS to reinstate the fired Arestegui.
Noroña also made repeated allegations of corruption and election theft, both of which are not new to the present Mexican President, nor any other for that matter. For some reason, though, allegations of alcoholism seemed to have crossed a line.
It’s been reported that the Calderon Administration wrote an apology that they insisted Arestegui read on the air. She refused.

Here is Arestegui’s live program, the one the prompted her firing:
