“Ch” and “Ll” Officially Stricken From Spanish?

It just doesn’t feel right.

¡Ingado, como se les ocurre! See what I mean.

Apparently the Real Academia Española, the final and absolute arbiter of all things español, has made some drastic changes to the language. The 22 members of the academy convened in Guanajuato, Mexico, recently and pruned the language of what they felt were archaic and redundant letters and accents and such.

If you’re new to the language, don’t sweat it, just learn it the new way. If you’ve got the now-old habits from childhood learning, don’t worry – we’re told the changes are voluntary. But doesn’t that imply that there’s an option for the academia? As in, it could have been obligatory? Language police and all that?

And what of spanglish? Would that mean my car would become and Evy? Don’t get me started.

I’ll be opening my locks with birds…think about it.
