Diabetes Is Reversible
If you’re dedicated and take care of yourself, you can become un-diabetic, according to a report from CNN. We wrote last week that 1 of 3 people in the U.S. is pre-diabetic and that, despite the efforts of people like Dr. Robert Treviño, the disease seems to be spreading more each day. But, there’s hope.
Regular exercise, cutting out sugar (and alcohol), carbs and fat and generally trying to keep the fat in your midsection, which causes an insulin imbalance in your body, can help you keep your sugar at non-diabetic levels.
I’ve actually seen this in real-life on more than one occasion. Several of my relatives have been diagnosed with diabetes, but with well-controlled diets and regular exercise, taken their blood sugar levels back to normal range, about 100 and below, without the need for medication.
There are obvious health benefits to not being diabetic, such as not dying, going blind or losing your feet, but there are other perks, too. For one, you don’t have to throw down so much money for insulin or other meds, and as CNN points out, it’ll be easier to get better insurance with that “pre-existing condition.”
The bottom line is, even as the corn (syrup) lobby-loving government pointed out this week, you need to eat healthy. Don’t eat too much of anything, fat, sugar and salt in particular, exercise a little bit a few times a week, and you should be fine. Because if you’re anything like me, you’ve seen people live — or die — from diabetes and it sure ain’t pretty.
