1 in 3 Adult Americans Diabetic

Everyone in the U.S., practically, knows someone who has diabetes now, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control. One out of three adults in the U.S. have pre-diabetes (high blood sugar), that’s 79 million people. Meanwhile 26 million people have diabetes, 7 million of them are not diagnosed and 12% of Latino adults are diabetic.

Whew! That’s a lot of diabetes!

I worry about diabetes all the time because, literally, half my family suffers from the disease. Too much pan, too much soda, too much too much. The point is we all have to start taking care of our health, taking care of the health of our loved ones, that is if we want to go on to live long, healthy lives.

The CDC went on to say that half of the people 65 and over in the U.S. suffer from pre-diabetes, and more than 25% are pre-diabetic. So we can all look forward to taking our parents to get their feet cut off? This simply won’t do, we all have to do better. Latinos have among the highest rates of diabetes of any ethnic group: 16% of Native Americans, 12% of African-Americans, 12% of Latinos, 8% of Asians and 7% of whites.

What’s your first step? Drink more water and less soda? Go walking? More veggies? Less tortillas? What do you think?
