Dominicans Set To Overwhelm Puerto Ricans In NYC
Although puertorriqueños are often associated with New York City as the go-to Latino group there, things are changing, according to a recent report. Apparently, Dominicans, Ecuadorians and Mexicans are replacing Puerto Ricans as the city’s dominant ethnic sub-groups, as boricuas are apparently moving to the suburbs.
The Census Bureau currently reports 800,000 Puerto Ricans in the city, more than 100,000 fewer than there were in the year 2000. Yet, the Dominican population is growing, from 332,700 in 1990 to almost 600,000 today. Mexicans have also grown, from about 187,000 in 2000 to more than 305,000 today. That doesn’t include people without papers, by the way.
The long and the short of it is that, even as the rest of the country changes due to Latino growth, so does New York City — even if there were plenty of Latinos there to begin with!
