Texas Department Of Public Safety: Avoid Mexico During Holidays
The Texas Department of Public Safety followed the U.S. State Department’s lead in warning people not to travel to Mexico during the holiday season. According to a press release:
“‘The safety and security of holiday travelers cannot be guaranteed if they venture into Mexico,’ said DPS Director Steven C. McCraw. The rising tide of violence in Mexico is well-documented from a variety of sources. Kidnappings, violence between cartels and battles between cartels and law enforcement authorities have escalated in recent years.”
McCraw continues, “There are no guarantees that drug-related violence will spare innocent bystanders and that criminals will refrain from attacking tourists.” Violence in Mexico is definitely getting scary, recently it was reported that the drug wars have cost 30,000 lives and we reported recently that Ciudad Juárez counted 3,000 deaths this year alone.
“Solving” Mexico’s drug violence problem isn’t going to happen overnight, and certainly not going to happen without significant legislative changes in the U.S. Legalizing pot, better controls over gun sales, etc. What do you think the U.S. needs to do to help resolve this growing violence?
