GOP’s Next VP Will Be Latino — Supposedly
Matt Lewis from Politics Daily has a piece that’s been making the rounds because of it’s scandalous headline, “Why the Next Republican VP Nominee Will Likely Be Hispanic.” Now, while I don’t think this is realistic on many levels, the fact is that the Democrats have been lame when it comes to supporting Latino candidates, and the GOP/Tea Party took advantage of them in this past election.
Let’s see what Lewis has to say:
- Hispanics represent a growing percentage of the voting population
- Republicans will most likely assume that nominating a Hispanic Republican might help increase that 38 percent (of the Hispanic vote they got this time around)
- Republicans are now in the enviable position of having a new generation of qualified Hispanic leaders to choose from. (Florida Sen.-elect Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov.-elect Susana Martinez, Nevada Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval)
So, as we see, Lewis’ piece was all headline and no story. But, again, it’s a good opportunity to point out that, unless Democrats stop glad-handing Latino voters for electing them without giving them a piece of the power sharing pie, the GOP/Tea Party will be all-too-happy to step in and do so — just like they did with Susana Martinez.
