Hispanic Caucus Gains Power in House
The Wall Street Journal reports that both the Black and Hispanic Caucuses are set to gain power in the U.S. House of Representatives after the most recent midterm election. President Barack Obama recently met with the Hispanic Caucus and has been pushing for DREAM Act passage.
The Journal reports:
“The black and Hispanic caucuses emerged from this month’s elections as among the largest blocs in the House, and their members said they planned to push hard for liberal priorities such as government spending to create jobs. Members of the two caucuses will hold nearly a third of the Democratic seats in the next Congress—61 of the party’s 190 seats—with the outcome of several additional House races still up in the air.”
Also: Texas’ Democratic Rep. Silvestre Reyes will become the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee; the caucuses won’t be able to set the agenda as Democrats are now in the minority; and it’s unclear whether incoming members of the Republican Congressional Hispanic Conference will support immigration reform.
Man, the telenovela in D.C. never ends, ¿qué no?
