Tantos Tacos: Hate, Escándalo, Food, Tech, Mexico and Hate
This week on NewsTaco we talked about food, hate, politics, voting, tech and a little more hate. It was a long week!
We started off the week talking about hate, specifically hate crimes and Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio got told off by the feds (and in hate-related news, ethnic studies teacher fought back by suing to keep their courses). We talked about hate in political ads, the funding of hate, what hate looks like when it tells U.S. Congressmen to “Go back to Mexico,” hate in Houston, hate via Hotmail, tolerance for hate and hating on undocumented students in Georgia (even as President Obama tried to encourage Latinos to get educated).
Victor Landa provided us with a small antidote.
Then there was a big escándalo at Univisión, detailed by Carlos Guerra. A pundit from that network told Latinos not to vote, Univisión was kind of sorry but the whole thing was just sad. But, thankfully, not as sad as wannabe politicos in their PJs.
But there was food, too. We’re talking migas, huevos rancheros and arroz — Carlos Guerra’s special recipe, no less! Victor Landa even wanted to start growing his own garden. In health-related news, if you don’t want Alzheimer’s, speak Spanish and to look younger check out some Vitamin E oil. And Sara Inés Calderón wanted to help our readers get a little more tech-savvy by sharing about Latin American businesses and social media and how you — the NewsTaco reader — can manage media with the best of ’em with HootSuite.
Mexico was on our minds this week. There was “social cleansing,” deportations and college student police chiefs. On this side of the border, there was talk of massive immigration court dismissals, 20% of the country being first- or second-generation American, 50 million Latinos in the next Census, most Latinos voters concentrated in the Southwest, speaking Spanglish, a new anti-immigrant law in Florida, the many jobless people in the country and their foreclosures, how Asians and Latinos look the same, Catholic electoral guilt and the Dems’ trickle of political pennies.
Qué tengan un buen fin de semana.
