President Obama’s boldest action on guns yet, explained

*You’ll be seeing lot’s about the President’s action on gun control this morning, this is the most concise and complete report I’ve seen. It explains what, why and the possible fallout about the announcement.

We compiled these numbers for context:

47,000 – The number of Latinos killed with guns in the U.S. between 1999 and 2013.

67 – The percentage of U.S. Latino gun deaths between 1999 and 2013 that were ruled homicides.

4.7 – The homicide victimization rate (per 100,000) for U.S. Latinos in 2013.

2.5 – The homicide victimization rate for whites in 2013.

62 – The percentage of U.S. Latino voters who say they prefer gun control over the rights of gun owners.

44 – The percentage of U.S. Latino voters who say that most Americans should be able to own guns if certain limits are in place.

82 – The percentage of foreign-born U.S. Latinos who favor gun control.

59 – The percentage of U.S. born Latinos who favor gun control.

After high-profile mass shootings, President Barack Obama has urged the American people to call on Congress to pass measures that would restrict access to guns and, hopefully, reduce gun violence. But after multiple pleas, Congress hasn’t acted, even after the grisly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

So Obama is now acting on his own — with executive actions.

Obama met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday to consider what he can dowithout congressional legislation to reduce gun violence in America, which kills many more people in the US than other developed nations. In a press conference after the meeting, White House officials announced a plan they had been working on for months behind the scenes to address gun violence.
