Video Tribute: Flaco Jimenez – The Grammy of a Lifetime
By Victor Landa, NewsTaco
With 60 years of musical legacy and 5 Grammy’s to his name, conjunto icon Flaco Jimenez will received the highest tribute in the music world this weekend- a Lifetime Grammy.
If you know conjunto, you know Flaco. If not, here’s a little of what he’s accomplished: he began performing when he was seven years-old with his father Santiago Jimenez Sr. in the 1940’s; he’s worked with Dr. John, David Lindley, Ry Cooder, Buck Owens, Dwight Yokum and Bob Dylan; he appeared in the Rolling Stone’s Voodoo Lounge album; he’s traveled the world taking conjunto, Tejano and Norteño music to Europe and the Far East; he’s appeared in a movie with Woody Allen and Sharon Stone; he is featured in several hit movie soundtracks.
But more than all of those things, in the Latino community and especially in the U.S. Southwest he’s known for his formidable accordion sound – the Flaco sound.
NewsTaco put this video tribute together in partnership with Galán Incorporated. Special thanks to Hector Galán for giving us access to his archives, and for editing this piece.
¡Felicidades Flaco!
