Latino astrophysicist receives prestigious prize (NBC Latino):  He’s a brilliant professor, but in science that can hardly make one rich or famous. But Juan Maldacena can now consider himself both.  The Argentinian-American physicist was named a Milner Foundation Fundamental Physics Prize recipient, one of nine physicists who each received a $3 million prize.

Latino Vote 2012: Ted Cruz Victory Spells Challenge For Democrats As Republicans Cultivate Hispanic Candidates (Huffington Post):  With an expected victory in November, Texas Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz would become the third Hispanic in the U.S. Senate. Perhaps more significantly, Cruz would be the second Latino Republican in the Senate — alongside Florida’s Marco Rubio — to the Democrats’ one senator, Bob Menendez of New Jersey.

Can Castro’s keynote speech energize Texas Hispanics? (Texas Monthly):  San Antonio mayor Julian Castro has a bright future, but he holds a nonpartisan office that is a notoriously poor base for winning statewide. Bill White didn’t make it; Ron Kirk didn’t make it; Kirk Watson didn’t make it. Castro has the time and the opportunity to make a splash. There is little that his party can do for him.

Ted Cruz: “When Was The Last Time You Saw A Hispanic Panhandler?” (Real Clear Politics): A friend of mine, a Hispanic entrepreneur asked me a question sometime ago, he said, “When is the last time you saw a Hispanic panhandler?” I think it’s a great question. I’ll tell you, in my life I’ve never once have seen a Hispanic panhandler, because in our community, it would be viewed as shameful to be out on the street begging. Those are all conservative values — faith, family, hard work, responsibility.

Will Tea Party Star Marco Rubio Get GOP VP Nod?  (NPR):  Among the Tea Party successes in the 2010 congressional elections was U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida. He is now one of those on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s short list of possible running mates.

Mitt Romney’s Spanish Ad Attacks Health Care Law (Latina):  The biggest swaying point for Latino voters seems to be where a candidate stands on health care issues, so President Obama has continued to ensure that this is an important part of his work. Mitt Romney on the other hand isn’t too keen on the idea of “Obamacare.”

Texas Reps Kick in for Hispanic-oriented PAC (Hispanic Business):  Three Rio Grande Valley state representatives committed $5,000 each Friday toward One Texas, a PAC formed last month to elect Latinos into the state House and engage Hispanics in confronting the state’s challenges.

White kids get more scans for low-risk head trauma (Reuters/Chicago Tribune):  Researchers found that of 39,717 children across the U.S. with minor head trauma, about 42 percent of the white kids had computed tomography – a high-powered X-ray – of the head while 28 percent of black and Hispanic children got the scans.

A Web Series Made by Latinos That Tells Latinos’ Stories (The New York Times):  The English-language television networks have had trouble connecting with the growing Latino audience, as Tanzina Vega and Bill Carter describe in Monday’s newspaper. The Latino characters that do appear in network shows often represent stereotypes — the trophy wife, the immigrant. In this video, Ms. Vega follows the production of the online series “East WillyB,” that one of its creators, Julia Ahumada Grob, says can be seen as a “Latino ‘Cheers’ set in gentrifying Brooklyn.” A Kickstarter campaign has come up with $50,000 in financing for new episodes.
